2016 Spring Break Observations on America.

What is correct to say? The United States of America is? or- The United States of America are?

It isn't so much a question of grammar as it is how you see our country. Is = unity. Are = diversity. Over Spring Break weather you traveled in the U.S. or abroad- or stayed home. Whether you share your own experiences an observations or report on what you read or watched in the news,

What would you say ties America and Americans together that is a part of our common national culture or identity? What about America do you see everywhere?

What would you say makes America diverse... not to the extent that it is divisive so much as is makes one part of America somewhat different than the rest? What sets different places apart- even in small ways?

The question of whether it is correct to say the United States is, or the United States are is going to be a huge political conflict in the U.S. from 1812 where we are picking up with our study of American History all the way through the Civil War. In fact, that question will be one of the causes of the Civil War.

This discussion will run through Sunday, April 3rd.
